Course Overview:

Health care is changing, and the role of the Medical Assistant is more important than ever.  The Medical Assistant is the most versatile member of the healthcare team and is an important part of the successful physician practice.  Although the skills the Medical Assistant performs will vary among medical offices, this course will fully prepare the student with a wide variety of skills, making him or her an essential part of the healthcare team.  This course will provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of clinical medical assisting, including care and management of the patient, the different body systems, administering and injecting medications, insurance and coding requirements, the special needs of pediatric and geriatric patients, and employment opportunities and strategies for Medical Assistants. 

The content in the certification course will prepare students to take the associated industry recognized exam.  Please note that the individual state requirements may vary.  Students will be responsible to check with their state’s governing body for state specific requirements.

Students will:

  • Discuss the medical assistant’s responsibility as a positive role model
  • Describe six strategies for effectively dealing with difficult people
  • Describe the two components of HIPAA Public Law 104-191
  • Describe the medical assistant’s role in patient education
  • Discuss office compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Create an appointment matrix for a practice
  • Describe the functions of written communications in the ambulatory care setting
  • Discuss the appropriate procedure and documentation for release of a medical record or information contained in the medical record.
  • Describe how a claim travels through the medical office
  • Explain the importance of timely billing and collections in the physician’s office
  • Identify the role of the medical assistant in infection control
  • Describe the purpose and the key components of the patient interview
  • List normal values for temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry
  • List and describe six examination techniques commonly used by the physician
  • List the three steps used to translate medical terms
  • Describe the role of the medical assistant when assisting with minor surgical procedures describe the medical assistant’s role in assisting with a tissue biopsy
  • Assist with examinations and procedures
  • Describe the role of the medical assistant in various medical specialty settings

ProTrain is committed to offering world class interactive online courses that provide training and learning support for the student in a number of ways during their experience. The ProTrain course structure has been developed to provide activities to guide students throughout the entire process of learning. Learning activities include hands-on assignments that allow students to use what they are learning to allow better transferable skills within their work environments; and collaborative assignments, like wikis and discussion groups that allow them to share what they have learned with others in the same course.

While a student learns, they are not alone. Each student will receive guidance and support from his or her assigned Training Assessment Manager (TAM) and Student Services Specialist (SSS) representative. In addition, we will offer live monthly webinars and feedback sessions for various subject categories. Throughout the entire course, students are monitored by the SSS representative using progress reporting from the ProTrain Registration System (PRS).

ProTrain will provide Students who successfully complete their online certification programs and pass their industry level certification exams the access to the new ProTrain Education-2-Employment Career Tracker system. The Career Tracker will allow our students who pass exams to load their own resumes at no additional cost, and letting industry employers find their talent through the same database.

Curriculum Developer Biography:

Willow Nolland is an expert in education and eLearning, with more than ten years of experience in curriculum development and instructional design. She has worked in higher education for over twelve years, and has developed numerous courses and has been involved in curriculum development across disciplines. She has experience with academic program development and coordination, curriculum development, student learning outcomes, educational partnerships, and student development. In addition, she has developed and administered professional development programs for various groups, including teachers, counselors, healthcare workers and members of private industry. She is a certified Quality Matters Reviewer and has taken graduate courses in online course development. She designs and teaches online courses at the college level and is proficient in a variety of course management systems. She has helped educators redesign their courses to transition them from a face-to-face format to an online format, and has provided course editing assistance to others. As a freelance instructional designer and curriculum developer, her projects have included course editing and redesign of online continuing education courses for nurses, CEU curriculum development for healthcare workers and teachers, and course review and editing for various colleges and universities.

This course prepares the student to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification exam.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: General Transdisciplinary

This lesson will introduce you to the profession of Medical Assisting including how to succeed as a Medical Assistant student, professionalism, healthcare of yesterday and today, and therapeutic communications.

Lesson 2: Legal Considerations

This lesson will explore medical, legal, and patient education considerations of Medical Assisting.  The legal relationship of the patient and physician will be covered in-depth from the standpoint of healthcare, but also in the many legal implications that arise from such a relationship i.e., morals and ethics.

Lesson 3: The Medical Office

This lesson will introduce you to a professional, pleasant, clean office environment that will inspire patient confidence and allows staff to work efficiently. The mechanics of how to set up an esthetically pleasing environment, as well as, the administrative tasks such as telephone techniques and appointment scheduling will also be covered.

Lesson 4: Communications & Record Management

This lesson will present medical records management and how to properly communicate these records since the Medical Assistant is responsible for the creation, filing, storage, and appropriate release of medical records.

Lesson 5: Clinical: The Patient Interview

This lesson will explore the patient interview, interviewing techniques, medical history, vital signs proficiency, physical examination, and documenting progress notes using the SOAP method. Essentials of medical terminology will also be detailed to allow for consistent, easily understood terms by the average patient.

Lesson 6: Clinical: Body Basics

This lesson will cover the basic requirements for each part of the body including: dermatology, neurology, cardiology & lymphatics, pulmonology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology.

Lesson 7: Clinical: Reproductive

This lesson will detail the structures and functions of both the male and female reproductive system including related medical terminologies, common reproductive diseases and treatments. Obstetrics and gynecological will also be reviewed along with common testing and surgical procedures during pregnancy.

Lesson 8: Clinical: Through the Ages

This lesson will explore health care starting from pediatrics all the way through to geriatrics including common disorders, diseases, procedures, and special needs for the various age groups. Since nutrition plays a key role in the development process, nutrition will be defined, as well as, how to plan and source good nutritional habits.

Lesson 9: Clinical: Pharmacology & Laboratory

This lesson will define Pharmacology, common terminology, dosage calculation, and medication administration.  The clinical laboratory will also be detailed including the primary purpose, laboratory tests, the laboratory profession, associated equipment, and patient preparation.

Lesson 10: Clinical: Response & Preparedness

This lesson will introduce clinical chemistry and serological procedures including urinalysis, and microbiology.  Given the current state of world affairs, medical assistants should be well versed in bioterrorism response and emergency preparedness to be able to properly communicate and executive emergency plans.

Lesson 11: Final Exam

All necessary materials are included.

This course prepares the student to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification exam.
